Market Facts

What’s Trending and Who’s Spending in E-Commerce Technologies and Services?

We’re pleased to offer this exclusive resource to the e-commerce industry because we take our rankings on solutions providers as seriously as we do the e-retailers we rank globally in our various research publications. Our dedicated staff of e-commerce researchers know the companies, technologies and trends impacting e-retailers’ technology purchasing decisions better than any other organization. With online retail sales in the U.S. growing by 14% in Q2, according to the Commerce Department, more web merchants are stepping up their investments in e-commerce solutions. In fact, our own findings from a recently published survey reveal what the 86.2% of e-retailers planning to spend more on e-commerce technologies and services during the next year will buy. What our proprietary data in the 2016 Leading Vendors to the Top 1,000 show is that the largest web merchants in the U.S. are increasingly investing more money and resources in specialized e-commerce applications and services, such as online advertising and mobile commerce, which reflects the overall industry trend toward personalization to the 9th degree.

This leads to a swelling rank of clients for the solutions providers most in demand. While the number of clients for vendors ranked in the 2016 Leading Vendors to the Top 1,000 across all 30 categories (some appear in multiple categories) collectively grew their retailer base 4.8% to 14,328 in 2015 from 12,476 in 2014, vendors in several specialized categories grew much faster. Based on the number of Top 1,000 clients, mobile commerce was the fastest-growing vendor category with a customer base that grew 19.2% to 236 retailers in 2015. By way of contrast, website testing/optimization, the fifth-fastest growing vendor category, grew by 8.8% to reach 432 2015 Top 1,000 retailers.
