Online thrift store ThredUp hires its first chief marketing officer

ThredUp, which sells used clothes for women, girls and boys, has hired its first chief marketing officer.

Anthony Marino comes from Virgin Hotels Group, where he worked from August 2009 until November 2012 as founder, CEO and head of global brand for the offshoot of the Virgin Group, according to his LinkedIn profile. Since leaving that job, he’s served as a board member for software-as-a service company Hipercept.

His new job gives him oversight of customer acquisition, merchandising, and brand and design. ThredUp launched in 2009 and had sold only children’s clothes until it expanded to women’s apparel in April.

“Consumers send their clothing directly to our processing and distribution center,” says a spokeswoman for the retailer. “We inspect the clothing, pay sellers upfront for the best stuff, and resell online for them. It’s just like if you were to drop off all your stuff at a consignment boutique but our customers don't have to leave the house.” 

Last year the e-retailer raised $14 million in a funding round led by Highland Capital Partners, she says. The e-commerce operator has raised $23 million in total.

“I was immediately intrigued by thredUp’s vision to reinvent an industry that’s basically been left for dead,” Marino says. “The thrift industry, much like airlines or banking or hotels, has operated a certain way for decades. ThredUp has the product differentiation and early adoption needed to change the game, turning apparel, which was once a consumable, into a durable.”
