It rolls out a new starter package and the vendor’s first “Enterprise” product.

X-Cart, an open-source e-commerce platform for small retailers, has introduced a new product suite that includes an X-Cart Gold starter package for a one-time fee of $195 per web site and what the vendor describes as its first “enterprise” platform with multiple features for larger e-commerce operations.
X-Cart, which is provided by Russia-based Qualiteam, is used by more than 25,000 businesses in more than 110 countries worldwide, the company says. Its clients include two retailers among the Internet Retailer Second 500.
The new X-Cart Enterprise version, which is priced at $12,950 per year and can include an unspecified number of web sites, comes with features for customizing web pages, site hosting services, integration with Facebook and a site search feature that provides suggested results as soon as a shopper enters the first few letters of a search term. It also comes with a dedicated staff of support personnel, including a web designer, project manager and other specialists.
X-Cart’s technology, which is based on the PHP open-source technology framework, is similar to the Magento e-commerce platform from eBay Inc. and well suited for small retailers, says Brian Walker, vice president and principal e-commerce technology analyst at Forrester Research Inc.
Walker adds, however, the “enterprise” label of X-Cart’s new high-end platform doesn’t appear to offer what’s generally considered standard features of so-called enterprise platforms designed for larger e-commerce operations. “These labels have become increasingly confusing in the market,” he says. “X-Cart is a product well suited for smaller businesses, and this particular ‘enterprise’ offering from X-Cart is aimed at providing a more full-service solution for small businesses, but in my view should not be characterized as 'enterprise.’”
E-commerce platforms designated as enterprise versions typically are designed to handle large volumes of customer traffic and transactions and come with a full suite of tools for web site management, order management and mobile commerce, Walker says. They’re also typically designed to support large teams of retail employees managing complex marketing and merchandising strategies, he adds.
X-Cart was not immediately available for comment.
X-Cart, which recently opened a U.S. office in Mountain View, CA, also announced two other e-commerce platforms that sit between its starter package and the enterprise version. The X-Cart Gold Plus package, priced at a one-time fee of $395 per web site, comes with features such as the ability to show retail prices in multiple currencies and a customer reviews application. The X-Cart Platinum package, at a one-time fee of $1,795 per web site, offers additional features and services.
