SAN FRANCISCO – August 15, 2012 – Wrapp, the new social gifting app that lets you give your Facebook friends free gift cards from leading retailers, today announced the addition of new merchant partners targeting back-to-school shopping, which is projected to increase 14 percent this year, according to an annual survey conducted for the National Retail Federation (NRF).
Backed by the co-founders of Skype and LinkedIn, Wrapp makes it fun and easy to give, receive and redeem gift cards using mobile devices or the Web, and allows Facebook friends to contribute to the presents.
New retailers on board for back-to-school shopping represent a cross section of top brands, including Office Depot, Rovio’s Angry Birds online shop, Zappos and Roots.
In addition, many of Wrapp’s existing U.S. retail partners, which now include Gap, Sephora, adidas, MLB.com, Brooklyn Industries, The Wall Street Journal, Fab, Warby Parker, Omaha Steaks, Threadless, WeSC, Wayfair and Spa Finder, are also scheduled to make special free gift card offers available during the back-to-school shopping season.
“Times are tough for a lot of Americans these days, but parents still want to send their children back to school with new supplies and clothes,” said Wrapp CEO Hjalmar Winbladh. “Wrapp is a super convenient way to make back-to-school shopping just a bit more fun and easy.”
Back-to-school spending for kids aged 6 to 17 is expect to total $30.3 billion this year. When college students are included, that number is projected to hit $83.8 billion, according to the survey of 8,509 consumers conducted last month by BIGinsight for the NRF.
Wrapp introduced its unique friend-to-friend marketing platform in Sweden in November 2011 and since then has taken its service to the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Norway, and Australia. Based in Stockholm and San Francisco, Wrapp was founded last year by a team of well-known serial entrepreneurs with extensive backgrounds in online and offline business, including digital music service Spotify, mobile VoIP provider Rebtel. and global fashion giant H&M.
Wrapp’s investors include Silicon Valley-based Greylock who’s partner Reid Hoffman co-founded the social network, LinkedIn, and Atomico, the London-based venture capital firm started by Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström. Both Zennström and Hoffman are on Wrapp’s board of directors.
“Back-to-school is second only to the holiday season when it comes to buying, according to the Wall Street Journal,” said Winbladh. “When it comes to shopping, Wrapp is the perfect partner for retailers that want to drive online customers into brick-and-mortar stores where over 90 percent of all sales are still made.”
