Kno.com cofounder and CEO Osman Rashid had a moment of inspiration a few years ago when he realized his children were doing homework the same way he did as a child. Why, he wondered, are students still using study tools like printed textbooks? If they used e-books, he thought, they would be using a digital format that can make learning more interactive. That led Kno.com to secure the digital rights to about 250,000 textbooks and journals from more than 60 publishers. The e-retailer now sells or rents e-textbooks to students at more than 6,000 colleges and universities in the United States. Students can highlight and add notes to the e-books, share notes and create flash cards tied to key concepts. Kno.com provides free apps for accessing content via tablet, smartphone, and computer.
