One of every five beauty purchases online is made via the Amazon marketplace, according to a new report.
The Norton Secured Seal now appears on Symantec-secured web sites.
Web site security provider Symantec Corp. is beefing up its look. The company recently added the Norton brand to its VeriSign web security seal.
Symantec bought the VeriSign business in 2010 and since then has been adding security features that go beyond Verisign’s best-known service of providing Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption and other security checks for retail and other web sites. SSL encryption protects ensures against eavesdropping during online sessions or tampering with web sites. Web sites with the VeriSign-Norton Secured Seal are now also protected against malware and provided vulnerability scans that can detect possible weak points in security.
The seal continues to designate the same server security, web page authentication and encryption services as before, but the rebrand signals a milestone for Symantec, says Rob Glickman, the company’s director of marketing for web site security solutions. “We’re using this as a springboard to bring web site owners the protection that they need, which is more than SSL,” he says. The seal is displayed on Symantec-secured web sites; “Norton Secured,” accented by a checkmark, appears above the phrase “powered by VeriSign.”
More than 150 million consumers in 170 countries use Symantec products, according to the company, and Norton products, such as antivirus packages, ship on more than 60% of Windows-based consumer PC’s.
Timeless Wrought Iron, and online retailer of wrought iron décor, furniture and accessories, stands to benefit from the confidence the Norton brand brings to its e-commerce site, says Ryan Hanson, the e-retailer’s founder. “People are pretty familiar with the brand, which is nice when they come to the site,” he says. “Overall I think it’s a good move. I think it’ll increase the credibility of the seal.” Timeless expects more than $1 million in online sales this year, compared with $500,000 last year, he says.
In the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, 154 retailers report using the VeriSign security seal on their web sites. In the Second 500 Guide, 52 retailers use the seal.
