The social networking giant gives mobile users better control over their privacy settings.
Facebook yesterday simplified its privacy controls for users accessing the site via browser-enabled mobile devices. In doing so the social networking giant promised to give its more than 500 million users a way to adjust their settings regardless of the device they are using.
“You can use these controls no matter where you are, what kind of device you have access to, or when you want to make a decision about your information,” wrote Michael Eyal Sharon, mobile product manager, on Facebook’s blog.
Users can adjust their privacy controls on their mobile device by visiting m.facebook.com/privacy or by clicking on “Privacy Settings” on the settings page of the mobile site. There users can select who can see the content they post.
The change comes several months after the social network came under fire over its privacy settings after an academic paper found Facebook and other social networking sites leaked data to advertising companies that marketers could use to find consumers’ names and other personal information—even though the social networking sites pledged that they don’t share that information without consent.
Those concerns led Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to announce the social network would introduce new privacy controls that cut down on the number of steps needed to limit who can see content posted by a Facebook user.
“We believe in privacy,” said Zuckerberg during a news conference announcing the May changes. “We believe in giving people control. But more and more, people want to share information. As long as they have good control over that, I think that's where the world is going."
