Web sales continue to shine at J. Crew

Web sales at J. Crew Group Inc. grew 11% in June and 19.5% in the first 22 weeks of the year over the same periods a year ago, while total revenue declined 2.2% for June and was flat for the first 22 weeks, the company reported today.

Companywide revenue was $65.4 million in June vs. $66.9 million a year ago, and $289.1 million in the first 22 weeks of the fiscal year vs. $290.6 million a year ago.

June’s web sales reached $10.9 million, 16.6% of total revenue, from $9.8 million, 14.6% of revenue, a year ago. For the first five months of the fiscal year, sales at JCrew.com totaled $49.7 million, 17.2% of total revenue, up from $41.6 million, 14.3% of revenue, a year ago.

Catalog sales fell 35% to $7.4 million in June from $10 million in June 2001 and 22.8% to $39.4 million in the first 22 weeks vs. $48.4 million a year earlier.

Comparable store sales were off 9.8% in June and 11.8% for the 22 weeks.

In addition to its web site and catalog, J. Crew operates 146 retail stores and 43 outlet stores.
