Internet Retailer’s proprietary ranking system uses an algorithm to score paid search marketers on these data points: the percent of traffic merchants receive from paid search ads, the whole number of website visits per month that stem from those ads, the average monthly spend on paid search ads, and the year-over-year increase in spending. For the 50 Best Natural Search Marketers, the proprietary algorithm takes into account four metrics--the percent of traffic merchants receive from natural search results, the whole number of website visits per month that stem from natural search results, and two metrics that show how prominently retailers show up in natural search results.

All data points are tallied for the best out of 100 possible points in the Index.
