Mobile sales are speeding up on the U.S. and U.K. affiliate networks of Affiliate Window—the networks generated 572 mobile commerce sales per hour in May, the company reports. Highlighting how fast m-commerce is growing, the networks recorded more mobile sales from January through May 2013 than they recorded from January through November 2012.
22.3% of all traffic on the networks was mobile in May, up from 19.1% in April, says Affiliate Window, which includes more than 10,000 affiliate sites. 13.6% of traffic stemmed from smartphones, up from 11.4%, and 8.7% of traffic came from tablets, up from 7.7% in April.
Mobile traffic converted at a rate of 3.8% in May, up significantly from 3.4% in April, the company says.
18.1% of all sales generated by the affiliate networks were mobile in May, up from 16.5% in April, the networks say. 7.5% of total sales were generated by smartphones, up from 6.7%, and 10.6% of sales came from tablets, up from 9.8%.
Apple Inc. devices continue to dominate mobile commerce on the affiliate networks. The iPhone accounted for 22.76% of mobile traffic on the networks in May, the iPad 58.46%, Android smartphones 11.57%, Android tablets 3.25%, and other mobile devices 3.96%, Affiliate Window reports.
“Consumer behavior and the way that people are accessing the Internet is changing,” says Matt Swan, a client strategist at Affiliate Window. “We have seen a significant increase in the percentage of traffic originating from mobile devices. In addition, we are seeing more advertisers optimizing their sites for mobile in order to convert this traffic. Where affiliate tracking was once an afterthought, it is now being added to advertisers’ mobile sites as a priority so we are naturally seeing more of these transactions track and affiliates remunerated for their efforts.”
