Premium steak and gourmet food seller Omaha Steaks has begun sending special offers in text messages to consumers who dial **Omaha or **Steak, it announced this week. Customers can redeem those offers by placing orders with a phone call or through the retailer’s mobile web site.

To kick off the new feature, Omaha Steaks is sending special offers and recipes from the Food Network South Beach Wine and Food Festival, taking place Feb. 21-24, to customers who dial **Omaha, it says.

“As a fifth-generation family-owned company, Omaha Steaks is honored to be on the cutting edge of this new technology that makes placing an order even easier,” says Todd Simon, senior vice president of Omaha Steaks. “**Steak and **Omaha offer customers a simple, easy-to-remember way to order our gourmet products on their mobile devices anywhere and at any time.”

After punching in either code, a customer receives a text or audio message with a prompt asking her for further action. Those options, depending on the capabilities of her phone, may be to call and place an order or to follow a link to Omaha Steaks’ mobile-optimized web site to order, a spokeswoman for the retailer says.  The web and catalog retailer is using software from mobile technology provider StarStar, a Zoove company, for the promotions.

“We recognize consumers want to be communicated with through mobile technology and are excited to provide this new option as an added level of service for our customers,” the spokeswoman says. To that end, the retailer in December also released an iPhone app with a grilling timer and informational videos.

OmahaSteaks.com Inc. is No. 124 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.
