Starbucks plugs gaps in its e-commerce management team

The coffee chain lost an online retailing executive to Best Buy last week.

Starbucks Corp. today promoted two employees who will take over duties for an e-commerce executive recently hired by consumer electronics chain Best Buy Co.

The coffee chain has appointed Adam Brotman as chief digital officer and Curt Garner as chief information officer. On Friday, Best Buy said it had hired Stephen Gillett to serve as president of Best Buy Digital and Global Business Services, a new job. Gillett had been Starbucks’ executive vice president of digital ventures and chief information officer, a job that included e-commerce oversight, since joining the coffee retailer in 2008.

“Over the past several years, there has been a seismic shift in consumer behavior in large part because of the rapid adoption of social and digital media as a primary means of connection and communication,” says Howard Schultz, Starbucks chairman, president and CEO. “At Starbucks, we have recognized this shift and have made it a priority to establish a position on the leading edge of innovation and are now taking this a step further. Adam, Curt and their respective teams will continue to lead the way as we accelerate our digital and technology investments.”

Brotman was senior vice president, Starbucks Digital Ventures. For his new job, he will oversee the coffee chain’s web, mobile and social media efforts; his duties also will include loyalty, Wi-Fi and related programs. Brotman joined Starbucks in 2009 and had worked as senior vice president of digital image licensing company Corbis.

Garner will be responsible for Starbucks’ global technology and engineering services. He has worked at the coffee chain for 14 years.
