And Bonobos offers more Cyber Monday discounts to make up for a site outage.
The quickest-loading e-commerce sites of top e-retailers yesterday, the shopping day known as Cyber Monday, were those operated by J.C. Penney Co. Inc., Apple Inc. and Macy’s Inc., according to web site performance firm Compuware Gomez.
Its Compuware Gomez Performance Index measured site-loading times between 12 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. Monday. The rankings above are for the largest 10 retailers in the firm’s review. Both J.C. Penney and Apple were among the top three best performers on Black Friday. Macy’s was the fifth-best performer, Compuware says.
Compuware says that Cyber Monday brought more site slowdowns than any other day of the long Thanksgiving weekend. “E-commerce sites slowed more than ever in the cyber onslaught,” a Compuware spokeswoman says. “Most had real trouble scaling to meet demand, but J.C. Penney had little performance degradation.”
J.C. Penney is No. 20 in the Top 500 Guide. Apple is No. 3 and Macy’s is No. 17. Compuware also compared yesterday’s performance of 50 major retail sites yesterday and the rankings change only slightly: J.C. Penney, Apple and Symantec Corp., No. 35.
The average page load time for the top 50 retailers on Cyber Monday was 10.049 seconds, up 21% from what is typical—that is, performance measured 30 days ago, the Compuware spokeswoman says. The average page load time for the top 10 retailers in the Compuware review was 8.269 seconds, up 14%.
Compuware says the best-performing mobile sites on Cyber Monday were those operated by Sears Holdings Corp., No. 7 in the Top 500 Guide; Amazon.com Inc., No. 1; and Dell Inc., No. 4.
Meanwhile, online-only men’s apparel retailer Bonobos, which is No. 789 in the Internet Retailer Second 500 Guide, today took a creative approach to technical problems that kept its e-commerce site inaccessible. Besides displaying a picture of a man’s bare legs with trousers drooped at his ankles, the retailer told consumers it would offer a rain check on its Cyber Monday discounts to make up for the headache. The retailer also promised to send consumers an e-mail with the offers.
