Traffic to Karmaloop’s site had increased 40% in 2010 over the previous year and the site was struggling under the load.
SAN MATEO, CALIF., — SEPTEMBER 7, 2011—Keynote Systems (Nasdaq: KEYN), the global leader in Internet and mobile cloud monitoring, today announced that Karmaloop, a multi-platform Web retailer specializing in global underground fashion and lifestyle, successfully used Keynote LoadPro Web load testing services to optimize their existing infrastructure ahead of the holiday rush. After a period of rapid growth in customer traffic that strained the capabilities of the Karmaloop.com e-commerce site, Karmaloop employed Keynote LoadPro to test the performance of its Website and recommend optimizations. By following Keynote’s suggestions, Karmaloop ensured that its site would serve customers throughout the 2010 holiday shopping season with high availability and performance. Karmaloop’s success with Keynote LoadPro underscores the critical need for retailers to prepare their sites now with real world load testing to be prepared for the 2011 online holiday shopping season.
“We selected Keynote because they provide a complete service solution that enabled us to test all aspects of our site’s performance,” said Joseph Finsterwald, chief technology officer at Karmaloop. “We had to configure our previous solution ourselves. That became a project that took us away from work on our own site.”
Karmaloop turned to Keynote in the wake of rapid growth. Traffic to Karmaloop’s site had increased 40% in 2010 over the previous year and the site was struggling under the load. Karmaloop wanted to uncover and correct specific performance issues before they impacted customers.
Based on its experience with other online retailers, Keynote developed test scripts that simulated numerous customers performing typical Web transactions, such as browsing the site and adding items to the cart. It then ran these scripts against the live site until performance began to degrade and then stopped the test. Using the results, Keynote was able to pinpoint potential performance issues and suggest steps to resolve them.
“Failure of our site could have potentially cost us $50,000 to $100,000 per each hour of outage during peak traffic,” said Finsterwald. “After we made the changes Keynote suggested and retested, our site did well enough that we felt confident our site would work well going into Black Friday and Cyber Monday. That wouldn’t have been the case had we not performed the load testing.”
“With Keynote LoadPro our customers test their Websites with real Internet traffic to uncover performance issues before they can impact end users,” said Anshu Agarwal, vice president of marketing at Keynote. “Karmaloop demonstrates how this service can give customers peace of mind knowing that their site will deliver the necessary availability and performance to meet their customers’ demands, even during periods of peak traffic.”
