In a move to compete with consumer electronic behemoths Best Buy and Circuit City, Target is offering next-day installation for shoppers who buy consumer electronics from its web site. The retailer has partnered with installment company Zip Express Installation for the program.
Consumers who search for major electronic products such as TVs or home theatre systems will be offered corresponding installation packages. The packages are sold separately as individual items and start at $130 for installation of a tabletop TV within five days of purchase. Next-day installation for the same item is a pricier $279.99 and packages can cost as much as $499 for next-day installment of a home theatre system. Target.com offers 10 installation packages on its site.
After consumers purchase an installment package on Target.com they can visit the Zip Express web site or call a toll-free number to schedule an appointment. Next-day installation is available anywhere in the U.S. and Canada.
This is Zip Express’ first deal with a major retailer, a Zip Express spokeswoman says. Zip Express also sells installation packages though its web site. There is no discount for purchasing a package on Target.com, she says.
Target is testing the service on its e-commerce site before deciding if it will offer it in stores, the spokeswoman says.
Target’s choice to outsource installation differs from some of its competitors. Best Buy’s Geek Squad members, for example, work directly for the retailer. “Many retailers today rely on the additional revenue gained from installation services,” says Chris Mauzy, president and CEO of Zip Express Installation. “Our services provide retail partners with the same benefits achieved from an in-house installation service, but without the overhead required to support the in-house program themselves.”
Zip Instillation has 16,000 installers. Target.com is No. 19 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.
