With a web presence in 11 metropolitan markets, Albertson`s is the U.S. grocer with the largest reach online and the only major one to offer a pick-up as well as delivery option for online ordering.
Albertson`s Inc.’s extension of online grocery service into the Salt Lake City, Utah market this week gives it a presence in 11 major metropolitan areas and what it says is the largest geographic reach of any U.S. online grocery retailer. The Salt Lake City-area online ordering service offers next-day delivery service and same-day store pick-up service at 33 neighborhood stores. Albertson`s is the only major online grocery service offering a pick-up option.
Registered shoppers placing online orders at Albertsons.com can place their order by 10:00 a.m. for pick-up after 5:00 p.m. that day, or by midnight for delivery the following day. Delivery can be scheduled within a 90-minute window to the shopper’s home or office, with a charge of $9.95 per order for delivery and $4.95 for the pick-up service. Prices for goods ordered online are the same as prices in local Albertsons stores, the company says. Online orders are picked from Albertsons stores by trained “e-shoppers.”
To launch the new local service, the retailer is running a weekly e-coupon promotion, which also will be featured in local Albertsons` mailers and newspaper ads, during the service’s first four weeks. “Albertsons was the first national brick-and-mortar chain to offer the online grocery service to its customers and we are proudly the first to bring this service to the Salt Lake City community,” says Frank Yakstich, Albertsons Utah area vice president. “With a 90-mintue delivery window or the alternative of picking up pre-ordered groceries at the store of their choice, our dot-com service is a continuation of our promise to make our customers’ lives easier.”
Albertson`s Inc. operates more than 2,500 stores in 37 states under the Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s, and Sav-on Drugs names as well as several other brands.
