Getting down to business

The one thing that the office supplies and computer electronics equipment retailers in this year's Hot 100 have in common is a focus on efficiency. Efficiency makes for convenience, and convenience leads to sales.



Why They're Hot: Professionals shopping for office supplies online want to get in and get out. Staples’ tablet, mobile and desktop sites, which it redesigned over four months last year, help them do just that. The new sites reduce the number of clicks required to check out by about 50%, says Faisal Masud, executive vice president of global e-commerce. Staples also made navigation more visible, moving a list from the left side of the home page to the center. The retailer further divided search into four categories: products, technology, services and industry. “We changed search from being less prominent to being one of the most prominent things on the home page,” Masud says. Since the redesign, revenue per visitor and revenue per search across the sites has grown by double-digit percentages.
