The e-retailer spends at least 50% of its monthly display ad budget on the highly targeted, data-driven—and often cheap—ad placements using programmatic platforms.

Scott Durchslag, a veteran of online businesses who was most recently president of online travel service Expedia Worldwide, will join Best Buy Co. Inc. as president of online and global e-commerce, effective Oct. 8, the retail chain said today. Durchslag, who will also be a corporate senior vice president, will report to Stephen Gillett, president of digital, global marketing and strategy, who reports to CEO Hubert Joly. "Scott's arrival at Best Buy signals our determination and commitment to create a world class customer experience—both online and in our stores," Joly said.
Durchslag joins Best Buy, No. 11 in the Internet Retailer Top 500, just weeks after Joly, former CEO of hospitality and travel company Carlson, took over the retailer’s top job on Sept. 4 from interim CEO Mike Mikran.
Mikran took the reins in April when former CEO Brian Dunn left during an investigation by the company’s board of directors into his conduct at the retailer. Mikran remains on the board as chairman of the audit committee.
Durchslag, in his new position as head of e-commerce, will be responsible for building Best Buy’s global e-commerce and multichannel retailing capabilities, the retailer says. His challenge will include competing with the often lower prices of online retailers, notably Amazon.com Inc. Asked about reports that Best Buy will compete more aggressively on price this holiday season, a spokeswoman says, "We are always looking for opportunities to demonstrate value to our customers, whether through the products we sell, services we offer or being competitive on pricing."
Durchslag will be directly responsible for all of Best Buy’s e-commerce channels worldwide, including BestBuy.com, Canada’s BestBuy.ca, CarphoneWarehouse.com, FutureShop.com and mobile commerce site m.BestBuy.com. He succeeds as head of e-commerce John Thompson, who held the title of senior vice president and general manager of BestBuy.com before recently retiring.
Durchslag started at Expedia in 2010, according to his LinkedIn profile. He managed the online travel company’s overall strategy, product development, marketing and operations of its 27 web sites worldwide. He also directed Expedia’s migration to its latest e-commerce technology platform. Durchslag resigned as president of Expedia in January.
In earlier positions, Durchslag was chief operating officer of Skype before eBay Inc. sold the Internet communications company to private investors in 2009. He started at Skype in 2008.
Durchslag was also a vice president at Motorola Inc., where he helped to launch the Razr mobile device product team and worked on partnerships with companies including Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc. He is also a former partner of business management consultants McKinsey & Co., where he worked with technology clients in the United States and Asia. Skype is now owned by Microsoft , and Motorola’s mobile device unit, Motorola Mobility, is now part of Google.
