Growth prompts Ibex Outdoor Clothing to seek a new e-commerce platform

Online sales growth leads the Second 500 retailer to look for outside technology expertise.

E-commerce growth is leading Ibex Outdoor Clothing LLC, No. 693 in the Internet Retailer Second 500 Guide, to look outside the company for a new e-commerce platform, says vice president of marketing Keith Anderson.

That marks a departure from its past practice of relying on internal staff to develop its e-commerce technology. “We have a really strong group of developers in-house, which gives us great flexibility,” he says. “We basically had no need to look for outside help.”

But the brand manufacturer of outdoor clothing and sport apparel experienced a 45% increase in web sales last year, to $5.2 million. That sharp rise triggered the decision to look to vendors for a new e-commerce platform.

That transition follows the infusion of an undisclosed amount of new capital into Ibex in September 2010 from venture capital firm North Castle Partners and other investors. “We’re confident our business partners understand our business model and will help bring us to the next level,” Anderson says.
