E-commerce stocks dodge the Wall Street downdraft

The Internet Retailer Online Retail Index advanced nearly 1% for the week.

Winners outnumbered losers nearly two to one last week as the Internet Retailer Online Retail Index advanced 0.77% last week, led by e-retailer Systemax Inc.

The Online Retail Index, which tracks the stocks of 25 online retailers and e-commerce technology providers, gained in a modestly off week for the broader stock market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.34%% and the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index finished 0.18% lower.

It was a busy week for Systemax, No. 23 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, which sells consumer electronics through such e-commerce sites as, and The e-retailer announced the resignation of e-commerce director Gilbert Fiorentino, ending three weeks of uncertainty over his fate, and then announced a 2% year-over-year increase in first quarter sales. Investors bid up the stock’s price 16.6%.

However, a tepid earnings report sent the share price of e-retailer PetMed Express, No. 107 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, plummeting more than 13%, making it the biggest loser for the week in the Online Retail Index..
