Travelers looking to book a room in a high-end hotel aren’t willing to wait around for a site to load. They expect an impeccable user experience.
That was a conclusion reached by tony hotel-booking site Kiwi Collection when Philippe Kjellgren, the company’s CEO, was in Europe showing the site to a group of European hoteliers and realized his site was taking an extremely long time to load.
The slow load time was the result of the site serving content from a single data center in the United States. The farther a consumer is from a site’s server, the longer it takes for data requests to travel back and forth, which results in slower load times and an inconsistent user experience.
To fix the problem Kiwi Collection enlisted web site acceleration vendor Strangeloop, which uses HTML transformation—altering page code so that it can be rendered most efficiently at the browser level after an HTML document has arrived.
Almost immediately, the site was transformed, says Jackie Reid, vice president of project services and program manager for the Visa Luxury Hotel Collection, whose concierge service uses Kiwi Collection’s technology to handle its hotel booking.
“We were incredibly impressed at how quickly Strangeloop improved the site’s performance,” says Reid.
For instance, the retailer cut the average load time across the world by more than half, from 13 seconds to 6 seconds. And, the effect was even more pronounced in Asia, where the load time fell from 22 seconds to 10 seconds.
