ECampus.com set a company record in January by shipping almost 200,000 textbooks through its textbook rental program. That represented a 400% increase from January 2010.
The online textbook retailer began offering the rental option in August 2009. Students can rent textbooks by semester, quarter or short-term—60 days—at different rates.
January was a particularly good month for electronic textbook sales as well, says eCampus.com, No. 246 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide. Its referral program, which offers students rewards for bringing in new customers, nearly outsold all of 2010 in January. The company declined to release specific sales figures for either category.
Ecampus.com offers new and used textbooks, textbook rentals, downloadable digital books, and a marketplace where customers can purchase used textbooks directly from other students. The site also offers a large inventory of DVDs and Blu-ray discs, as well as licensed college clothing and gifts.
