Netflix.com was unavailable to at least some visitors for a time Thursday afternoon. The site appeared to be functioning normally again by Thursday evening.

“We are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it,” a spokeswoman for Netflix Inc. said in an e-mail response to an inquiry about the site’s problems Thursday afternoon.

Netflix is No. 14 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide.

Pingdom, a web site monitoring firm, said Netflix.com experienced problems between 9:55 a.m. and 4:33 p.m. Pacific time. "During most of this time the site was almost completely inaccessible," a Pingdom spokesman says. "Even when we managed to load a page occasionally, it was exceedingly slow."

The spokesman did not have a reason for the site problems. "The nature of the problem is hard to pin down since it was clearly something internal at Netflix," he says.

The web sites of several major e-retailers have crashed in recent months, including Costco Wholesale Corp.; No. 15, Gap, Inc. Direct, No. 23; The Home Depot Inc., No. 39; and CVS Caremark Corp., No. 73.
