Staples names a president for its European operations

The office supplies retailer, which operates e-commerce sites for 15 European countries, has named former Office Depot executive Rob Vale to the new position of president of Staples Europe.

Staples Inc., which operates e-commerce sites for 15 European countries, has named former Office Depot executive Rob Vale to the new position of president of Staples Europe. He reports to Peter Ventress, president of Staples International.

The multichannel office supplies retailer also operates retail catalogs and stores as well as business-to-business operations in Europe. As president of Staples Europe, Vale will lead a new regional management structure in Europe covering the markets of Benelux, Central Europe, the Nordic countries, Southern Europe, the U.K. and Ireland.

Vale most recently served as CEO of Spicers Ltd., a European office products wholesale distributor. Prior to Spicers, he was senior vice president of European operations for Office Depot Inc. and, earlier, managing director of European subsidiaries of Lyreco SA., a b2b distributor of office supplies. Staples is No. 2 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide; Office Depot is No. 3.

Staples operates 12 retail web sites that serve nearly 3 million customers in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K.

Staples also operates 334 retail stores in five countries: Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal and the United Kingdom. The company also operates Staples Advantage, which sells through contractual arrangements with businesses in 15 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
