E-commerce stocks run with the bulls on Wall Street

The Internet Retailer Online Retail Index of 25 e-commerce stocks was up 6.6% last week, as prices rose across the board until a sell-off Friday. E-retailer Blue Nile led the way, as its stock price went up 25.2% for the week.

The bulls were on a rampage last week-until a sell-off Friday-and the rising tide lifted e-commerce stocks along with the broader market.

The Internet Retailer Online Retail Index of 25 e-commerce stocks was up 6.6% for the week. That put it right in the middle of the best-known measures of the broader stock market, the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, which was up 6.2%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which gained 6.8%.

22 of the 25 stocks in the Online Retail Index were ahead for the week. As of Friday’s market close, the index stood at 112.15, meaning it is more than 12% higher than it was on Jan. 1, when it was benchmarked at 100.

Added to the index last week was Inc., No. 36 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide. It replaces content management technology vendor Interwoven, which has been acquired by Autonomy Corp.

Here are the best-performing stocks last week in the Online Retail Index and the percentage price increase for the week:

  • Blue Nile, 25.2%
  • American Greetings, 19.8%
  • United Online, 17.1%
  • CyberSource, 12.2%
  • Systemax, 11.6%

Here are the Online Retail Index stocks that fell in price the most or had the smallest gains last week and the percentage change in price for the week:

  • Netflix, -4.7%
  • Keynote Systems, -1.3%%
  • Omniture, -0.5%%
  • Amazon, +0.8%
  • DemandTec, +0.8%.
