Four months after introducing apparel sales, Amazon.com says apparel is now its fastest-growing category in terms of number of units sold. "Apparel`s success validates our belief that customers would accept a wide range of offerings from Amazon.com," a spokesman tells InternetRetailer.com.
Amazon, which now offers more than 500 apparel brands, continues to look for additional apparel brands and products, the spokesman says. Although he declines to provide figures in terms of sales or units sold, he notes that Amazon does particularly well in specialty products.
Among its strongest apparel categories are children’s, maternity, and specialties such as big-and-tall sizes.
Amazon is already preparing for the back-to-school selling season in the fall. The preparation focuses mostly on expanding the number of apparel brands, including school uniforms. "Back-to-school will be big for us," the spokesman predicts.
