Hewlett-Packard Co. has launched a new web site, Pronq.com, where businesses can try five software products before they buy.

“We saw an opportunity to differentiate HP between traditional sales models,” says Caroline Tsay, HP’s vice president of web and e-commerce. The five programs initially offered represent just a small selection of HP’s software selection, Tsay says.

HP Home & Office Store, HP’s consumer-facing e-commerce business that sells it printers, computers and accessories, is No. 23 in the 2013 Internet Retailer Top 500.

HP launched Pronq.com in December. Tsay did not comment on traffic to Pronq.com, but says 85% of those using the site represent new business for HP. The site has a long way to go before it rivals the traffic to HP.com. Pronq.com ranks 187,460 among U.S. web sites, while HP.com is No. 284. HP has been working with marketing consulting firm DemandGen International Inc. to build traffic to the new site through online advertising, search engine marketing and industry events. The software offered on Pronq.com is delivered via the web, a model known as software as a service that frees client companies from hosting and maintaining the software in their own data centers.

Customers can register on Pronq for free and try out any of the five programs, but currently have to go through a salesperson to complete a purchase. HP has plans to add purchase orders and e-commerce capabilities to the site and eventually will accept credit cards, Paypal and wire transfers.  “We want it to be accessible,” Tsay says.
