Groupon Inc. has beefed up its executive team with two hires, including a vice president from the Silicon Valley e-commerce research unit of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Groupon is No. 65 in the 2013 Top 500 Guide.

Sri Subramaniam becomes Groupon’s vice president of engineering for smart deals. He had worked as vice president for @WalMartLabs, a job he started in March 2011, according to his LinkedIn profile. While there, he oversaw the retail chain’s development of a new site search tool for Walmart.com, among other projects. Before that, he was vice president of engineering at Kosmix, which Wal-Mart bought in 2011, largely using the Kosmix team as the core of its new @WalMartLabs e-commerce research and development arm.

Wal-Mart is No. 4 in the Top 500.

Groupon also has hired Tamer Tamar as senior vice president of international operations. He previously worked at online travel services provider Orbitz Worldwide Inc. in a similar job, overseeing Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He will start his Groupon job in April and work from London.

"We're thrilled to have Tamer and Sri join Groupon and bring their incredible talent to our expanding bench of senior executives," says Groupon CEO Eric Lefkofsky. "Tamer and Sri will accelerate Groupon's plans to grow our international operations and deliver more and more relevant deals to our customers throughout the world."

Groupon, through its direct-to-consumer Groupon Goods division, took in $454.7 million in revenue in 2012, up more than 2,000% from the previous year, according to the Top 500. The e-commerce operator, which in recent years has expanded beyond selling discount vouchers into offering physical merchandise, recently opened its first fulfillment center.
