Groupon ends its gun-related deals

The ‘hiatus’ comes about a month after the Newton school shooting.

Groupon Inc. today said it has stopped offering gun-related deals to consumers in North America. What the daily deal operator calls a “hiatus” comes just more than a month after the shootings at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newton, CT.

A Groupon spokeswoman declines to explicitly link the company’s decision with that incident, in which 20 students, six facility members, the shooter’s mother and the shooter died. Nor did Groupon give details about how many gun-related deals it had offered.

“All scheduled and current gun-related deals featured on Groupon North America, including shooting ranges, conceal-and-carry and clay shooting, have been placed on hiatus while we review internal standards that shape the deal inventory we feature,” says spokeswoman Julie Mossler in a statement. “The category is under review following recent consumer and merchant feedback."

Late last year, Groupon inked a deal with Major League Baseball that makes Groupon Inc. MLB’s official daily-deals site.
