Office Depot Inc. held on to its No. 1 ranking in the Keynote Mobile performance index for the week ending Dec. 23. Its site loaded successfully 100% of the time and in 3.31 seconds on average.
The combination of the speedy homepage load time and the impressive 100% availability is what helped the retailer land the No. 1 ranking yet again this week, says Herman Ng, mobile performance evangelist at Keynote Systems Inc.
“Two things they do consistently week in and week out is keep the home page light and efficient with six page elements averaging 70 kilobytes in total page size,” Ng says. “They utilize a content delivery network to host three of the page elements to do the heavy lifting.”
Content delivery networks store web page content on servers located around the world, and thus can deliver content from servers geographically close to the consumer, making web pages load more quickly.
Meanwhile, Buy.com, which sped up its site last week and moved from No. 11 to No. 8 in the index, jumped ahead even further this week to No. 2. Buy.com’s mobile site loaded in an average of 4.97 seconds and loaded successfully 99.89% of the time for a score of 939. The average load time of all 30 mobile sites was 8.86 seconds and the page load success rate average was 99.24%. The average score was 779.
Buy.com, is No. 30 in the Internet Retailer Mobile 400 and Office Depot is No. 65.

Keynote Systems measures 30 representative m-commerce sites exclusively for Internet Retailer. The sites include merchants in multiple categories and channels, and of multiple sizes, ranging from such giants as Amazon.com Inc. to midsized retailers like Toolfetch.com LLC. Keynote tests the sites in the index every hour Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. through midnight Eastern time, emulating three different smartphones on three different wireless networks: Apple Inc.’s iPhone 4 on AT&T, the HTC Evo on Sprint and the Droid X on Verizon. The HTC Evo and the Droid X run Google Inc.’s Android operating system. Keynote runs the tests in New York and San Francisco.
Keynote combines a site’s load time and success rate, equally weighted, into a single score. Given that both performance and availability are important, the score reflects the overall quality of the home page; a higher score indicates better performance. Scores also reflect how close sites are to each other in overall quality. The index average score is the midpoint among all the sites’ scores.
