Nokia’s Lumia smartphones will display nearby Groupon Now offers in the U.S.

In the latest maps update at Nokia, the Finnish mobile phone maker has teamed up with Groupon Inc. to display the location of nearby Groupon Now offers on its Lumia smartphones, the company announced this week in its corporate blog. The app is only available to U.S. customers for the time being, given the geographical limitations of Now deals, Nokia says.
Groupon Now deals are coupons for local retail, dining, activities and services—such as $5 off at a sandwich shop or a $15 pedicure—that expire in a shorter timeframe than standard Groupon offers, typically within a few hours or a day of purchasing. Lumia owners, who can download Nokia Maps from the Windows Marketplace or by scanning a QR code posted in the company blog, will see the deals indicated by a green ‘G’ on maps along with their usual search results. Details about specific offers are also available on the map. If users click through to purchase they will be redirected to the Groupon mobile site. Consumers must have a Groupon account set up to access the deals.
“Groupon Now on Nokia Maps is a great way to get nearby deals on demand that you can buy and use the same day,” Nokia writes. “We think that this is a perfect way to try new places or find great offers around you, in your home city or when traveling.”
Studies have shown that the majority of searches conducted on smartphones have local intent, and local is a key for Nokia.
“Location-based services are core to our goal of bridging the virtual world with the real world, and providing users with new and better ways to experience the world around them,” says a Nokia spokeswoman. “By working with Groupon and other partners, we’re consistently able to offer new features that give users the answers to everyday questions like ‘How do I get there?’ or ‘Where can I find the nearest deal?’”
Nokia Lumia smartphones are available in the United States through AT&T Inc. and T-Mobile USA Inc. Nokia’s mapping capability stems from its $8.1 billion acquisition in 2007 of Navteq, a provider of digital mapping services for many major Internet map services and automobile manufacturers.
The terms of the partnership with Groupon were not disclosed.
