Specialty retailer Brookstone Inc. says it has hired Stephen Bebis as president and CEO, effective immediately. He also gains a spot on the company’s board of directors.

Brookstone is No. 180 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide. It sells household products and gift items.

Bebis takes over for Jackson Tai, board chairman and interim president and CEO since January. That’s when Ron Boire resigned to take a job as executive vice president, chief merchandising officer and president of Sears and Kmart. Sears Holdings Corp., which owns Sears and Kmart, is No. 8 in the Top 500 Guide.

For the last 14 years, Bebis was president and CEO of Golf Town, a Canada-based multichannel retailer that recently announced it was buying Golfsmith International Holdings Inc., No. 209 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide. After founding Golf Town, Bebis helped the retailer grow to 57 stores, including an expansion last year into Boston, Brookstone says. Earlier in his career, he worked as president and CEO of Jumbo Sports Inc., president and CEO of The Home Depot Canada, and in store sales and management for Sears.

“We conducted a broad CEO search and interviewed a number of highly qualified internal and external candidates,” Tai says. “We were impressed by Stephen's track record as an entrepreneur, his hands-on experience as a manager and mentor at the highest levels in the retail industry, and his ability to drive growth and achieve market leadership."
