The Thanksgiving weekend brings site headaches for multiple online retailers

PC Mall, Crutchfield, American Eagle and Target are among the retailers suffering problems.

PC Mall Inc. and Crutchfield Corp. were among the retailers experiencing significant downtime on their e-commerce sites Monday, according to web site performance monitoring firm Catchpoint Systems Inc. Monday is the shopping day known as Cyber Monday.  Neither company could be immediately reached for comment.

The e-commerce site operated by PC Mall, No. 52 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, had suffered 77 minutes of downtime as of noon Eastern time, Catchpoint says. The Crutchfield site had 60 minutes of downtime.  The firm monitored the top 55 sites in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide (excluding Netflix Inc., Blockbuster Inc., 1-800-Flowers.com Inc., Scholastic Inc. and Redcats USA).

Here is a list of what Catchpoint calls the worst-performing online retail sites as of noon Eastern today, followed by the retailer’s rank in the Top 500, the percentage of time the site was property functioning, and the downtime minutes:

Other e-commerce site also experienced problems over the holiday weekend, according to a report from web site performance monitoring firm AlertBot.

The site operated by American Eagle Outfitters Inc., No. 57 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, was down for a little over eight hours between about 9 p.m. Eastern time Wednesday and today, says AlertBot sales and marketing manager Justin Noll. “An error message appeared numerous times over the Thanksgiving break,” he says.  “The issue appears to be due to the 40%-off party they were having that likely overloaded their network.”

The e-commerce site operated by Target Corp., No. 22 in the Top 500 Guide, experienced loading problems for more than two hours on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving—the latest difficulty for the redesigned site since its introduction in August. The problems occurred between 3:30 p.m. and 4:10 p.m. and 5:10 and 6:45 p.m. Eastern time on Friday, AlertBot says.

“The home page either failed to load or only loaded partially,” Noll says. “Fortunately for Target, the majority of the time the page was able to partially load enough that visitors may not have noticed.”

A spokesman for Target said the chain's site did not go down but gave no other details. American Eagle offered no immediate comment.
