The e-retailer uses Akamai technology to cache web content.

When flash-sale retailer HauteLook.com sends daily e-mails highlighting its latest limited-time offers consumers flock to the merchant’s site. That traffic surge can put a strain on the web merchant’s servers, located in Los Angeles.
“In order to satisfy member expectations for an outstanding online shopping experience, we needed to deliver dynamic content without fail to all site visitors,” says Kevin Diamond, HauteLook’s chief technology officer.
That’s why the retailer, which was recently acquired by Nordstrom, last year turned to Akamai’s Dynamic Site Accelerator application. The application uses Akamai’s global content delivery network of 84,000 servers to cache web site content, then secure and accelerate the delivery of that content on web pages.
“When HauteLook sends out special promotions that drive massive amounts of traffic to their site, Akamai ensures that their site can scale to handle those traffic demands while ensuring fast and consistent site performance,” says Margaret Rivera, Akamai’s senior industry marketing manager, commerce.
Akamai has offloaded about 95% of the requests to the HauteLook site the Akamai system. Diamond says that since HauteLook deployed the Akamai technology, the flash-sale site has increased its member base by about 200%.
“As we further grow the business, we want members to have the same site experience as on day one,” he says. “With Akamai serving our content, members can access the site the second a sale event goes live, shop in an extremely fast manner, get merchandise before someone else, and check out quickly.”
