Web sales declined for Books-A-Million Inc. in the first quarter, but total revenue improved slightly.

Web sales for Books-A-Million, No. 318 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, declined 12.7% to $5.5 million in the retailer’s first fiscal quarter ended May 2 from $6.3 million in the first quarter of 2008. In comparison total sales increased 2% to $118.2 million from $115.9 million in the prior year while comparable-store sales declined by 1%. The web accounted for 5% of sales in the quarter. Net income increased 134% to $2.1 million in Q1 from $906,000 in the first quarter of 2008.

“The decrease in net sales for the electronic commerce segment was due to difficult macroeconomic conditions,” Books-A-Million says in its recently filed quarterly statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Q1 increase in total sales is a result of new store openings, the retailer says. In the past year, Books-A-Million opened 14 new stores and now has a network of 21 bricks-and-mortar locations.
