Conversion rates increased 7% per month at Instawares.com in the first three months after the restaurant supply superstore implemented a new site search solution in July, says David Lu, chief technology officer. The number of people spending time searching the site also increased 7% per month between July and September.
Originally, Instawares.com used the standard offering that came with Google’s search appliance, but realized it needed a more customized search solution that would allow clients to drill down into information from hundreds of thousands of products, Lu says.
“In addition to making it easy to find products in our large inventory, we needed to make sure that the retrieval was immediate and that the results were prioritized and relevant, which makes for an exceptional online shopping experience,” he says.
Instawares.com then implemented a new version of the Learning Search solution offered by SLI Systems Inc., an on-demand search services provider. The newest version can index up to five million distinct documents and product listings. It also uses favorable reviews from customers searching for restaurant and janitorial equipment and supplies to provide suggestions for similar products that would likely be of interest to others who search using the same keyword.
Instawares.com, No. 216 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, also was seeking a hosted solution because its technical staff is small, Lu says.
