Media download giant Napster Inc. has introduced Napster 3.7, an updated version of its digital music service. The new application features PowerSync, an optimized synchronization engine the company created to enhance speed and ease of transferring subscription music content to any of a growing number of compatible MP3 players, the company says.

“Napster 3.7 significantly enhances the digital music experience and finally delivers on the promise of truly seamless transfer of subscription music content to compatible MP3 players,” contends William Pence, chief technology officer.

Napster 3.7 with PowerSync, developed in-house, is available only to Napster subscribers. As part of the new application launch, the company also has introduced a new Napster MP3 player. The 1GB flash-based device features a color LCD screen, FM tuner, six equalizer settings, and support for WMA and MP3 files. It also can be used to view JPEG files and play MPEG4 videos.

Pure-play Napster, No. 100 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide to Retail Web Sites, grew sales 141.1% in 2005 to $85.3 million compared with $35.4 million the previous year.
