Toys R Us Inc.’s ToysRUs.com narrowed its operating loss to $5 million for the second quarter ended July 31 from $9 million a year ago, as Q2 net sales remained the same as the year-ago quarter at $51 million, the retailer said today. ToysRUs.com’s net sales for the first half declined 3.7% year-over-year to $104 million from $108 million, but rose 6.2% after excluding the Q2 2003 sales of ToysRUs.com Japan, the company said. ToysRUs.com reduced its first-half operating loss by 47%, to $9 million from $17 million a year ago, it said.

Comp store sales for the U.S. toy stores division of Toys R Us declined 7.7% for Q2 and 6.6% for the first half, compared to the year-ago periods. Total Q2 sales declined 9% year-to-year, to $1 billion from $1.1 billion. Total sales for the first half fell 8.6% year-to-year, to $2.1 billion from $2.3 billion.
