One site, many masters: Accommodating conflicting design objectives
Mike Ritter, Vice President, HP Home & Home Office Store
Tony Svanascini, President, AmericanEagle.com
There is no single standard by which retailers craft a web site design. For instance, to get a web page high in natural search rankings, a web page design needs lots of text with keyword-rich copy, but to move site visitors toward conversion, the page design needs images, easy navigation, and much less text. Or to appeal to a site's frequent customers, a web page may bypass commonly used language in favor of its own brand-specific terms, but that can leave first-time visitors in the dark. In this session, a design expert and a retailer will define the many common tensions that exist between different design demands—such as SEO vs. usability, or addressing what draws loyal customers vs. newcomers through the site—and how web site operators can resolve those conflicts in site design. |
