Taking Security into Your Own Hands

As Internet retailers attempt to win over the many consumers who remain skeptical of online transaction, security is becoming one of the biggest issues affecting the continued growth of online retailing. As the volume of orders goes up, so too do fraudulent orders. Preventing those orders from going through is of paramount importance to online retailers. This session will look at the extent of the problem and feature an e-retailer who has taken steps with internal systems as well as with external security providers to virtually eliminate fraudulent transactions. Our first speaker, Julie Fergerson of eFunds, has made a career of identifying and fighting payment fraud, and she will discuss how widespread the problem is and reveal some of the latest scams. Our second speaker, Ezzie Schaff of Ice.com, will discuss how the online jewelry retailer caught nearly 400 fraudulent transactions last year by combining geolocation and other elements into a home-grown program that flags potentially fraudulent transactions that appear to need closer scrutiny.
