A new way to handle e-returns is growing in Lillian Vernon`s laboratory
Description: “We save costs through the process of aggregating items rather than sending them back one two-pound package at a time,” the Newgistics spokeswoman says. “And USF Processors are experts at this. They can handle perhaps 100 items per staff hour versus many retailers we talk to who can handle about 10 items per hour. There are a lot of efficiencies built into the system, so we can offer service at a lower unit cost to handle the items.” The customer, meanwhile, gets a neighborhood drop-off point, cheaper return shipping rates, and rapid credit for the return.

The eulogies start for not-yet-dead eToys
Description: Great reviews probably will not be able to save faltering eToys Inc. The online retailer gained consistently high marks from analysts and consultants. But online consumers have shown a decided preference for shopping the offline brands. “The online brick-and-mortar retailers had a very strong holiday season,” says Barrett Ladd, senior retail analyst at Gomez Advisors. “We’re seeing the consumer re-evaluating where they shop online in terms of offline versus pure-plays.”
Behind the success of 1-800-Flowers.com is a willingness to try new things
Description: But the rosy predictions for 1-800-Flowers.com aren’t immune to marketplace pests, and buried in a blooming business are some potential thorns. “It has to move into gifts but this is something that hasn’t proven out yet,” says Eric Beder, equity analyst at Ladenburg Thalmann. “They’ve spent 20-some years teaching people that 1-800-Flowers is flowers, and now they’re going to try to teach them that it means gifts in two and a half to three years. Do gifts have as much potential to draw customers as flowers do? The jury is still out on that.”
How the smarter marketers at SmarterKids.com get inside customers` heads
Description: While SmarterKids is in the same boat as most other big online retailers—it’s far from making money—the company has created rapport with its customers. And many believe that that will be one of the keys to success. With its questionnaires for parents, a patented system for matching educational toys with the learning needs of children, and a staff of teachers and educational specialists that evaluate toys, SmarterKids is building a blueprint for successful web selling. SmarterKids will “focus on those programs that bring us the most loyal customers,” executives said in the most recent quarterly report.
Using automated e-mail keeps Borders.com`s stafffing under control
Description: Tuller says artificial intelligence is at the core of the product, and Brightware’s origins in a pioneering AI company are critical to its success. As Tuller puts it, AI may be a major strategic asset for Brightware, but “it’s also one of the bigger challenges of the marketplace, because AI falls in and out of favor.” So Brightware would rather talk about more efficient customer service.

Merchants getting Grinched by card fraud
Description: The credit card industry has the fraud problem under control in the real world. Fraud accounts for only about 0.1% of the 25 billion credit card transactions worldwide. But, online the number soars. Celent Communications, Boston-based research firm, estimates that online card fraud during the 2000 holiday shopping season topped $300 million—or 3% of sales. That is a sizeable chunk for a business on thin margins. “A lot of problems come from the fact that many merchants don’t have a system to track or identify fraud,” says Meredith Hickman, Celent analyst. “As more merchants start using anti-fraud systems the fraud rate should slow down.”
Last year`s fulfillment problems didn`t hurt this year`s online retail sales
Description: A Goldman Sachs/PC Data study reports that consumers spent $8.9 billion in November and December, nearly double the $4.5 billion a year earlier (see table).
