A perfect fit-online
Description: Apparel seems to be coming into its own on the web as online merchants figure out the not-so-secret formula to successful sales: Make buying clothes on the Internet as much like buying in the store as possible but leave out the tedium. Shoppers at LandsEnd.com and JosABank.com can now skip the frustration of doing battle in a dressing room with standardized sizes that don’t fit exactly, thanks to new shopping tools and technology that offer custom-tailoring of clothing online. And shoppers’ response to customization suggests these two retailers could be at the top of a trend.

Some surprising results for video display at EddieBauer.com

An early frost hits Bloomie`s web strategy

A plus for big guys
Description: Think only big women have a hard time finding fashionable cloths that fit? PlusSize.com doesn’t think so. The e-shopping mall site that caters to women size 12 and larger late last year launched PlusGuys.com for the big and tall man.
Getting Top Dollar
Description: Everyone remembers last year’s online price testing debacle at Amazon.com. The poster child for Internet retailing sparked a major backlash from consumers when it gave different DVD buyers different discounts to test sales response. When shoppers found out — and some who’d been offered lesser discounts complained — the buzz got so negative that Amazon changed it policy to give everyone the lowest price at the end of a test.
Finally, a way for furniture sales to work on the web
Description: Back in the days when optimists thought retailers could sell anything online and consumers would buy anything, there were plenty of furniture sites. But it turned out that consumers weren’t all that hot about making that final furniture commitment online. So, like so many other sites, e-commerce-enabled furniture sites are mostly gone today.
Finding the return in returns
Description: Returned goods are e-retail’s hot potato. Bouncing from dissatisfied customer to carrier to warehouse and then on to store or liquidation, they present a problem and a cost every step of the way. But Austin, Texas-based Newgistics Inc. has pulled together an alternative in its ReturnValet service. If tests by Spiegel Group companies in five markets are successful this holiday season—and they got off to a good start with several thousand customers using the service in the first two and a half weeks—ReturnValet could raise the bar for the rest of retail by making the effective handling of returns into a competitive edge and by shaving as much as 50% off a retailer’s current cost of returns.
Online selling bucks the Holiday 2001 retailing trend: Sales are up sharply
Description: Online retailers held their breath as the Christmas shopping season got off. Dire predictions of the state of retailing in this economy gave many retailers a higher degree of uncertainty than they had experienced since the rise of Internet-based retailing in the mid 1990s.

Come together
Description: ShopNBC is pursuing two separate but linked programming initiatives to grow sales among its existing customer base and bring in new customers. One approach aggregates merchandise under celebrity names seeking to leverage their cachet in the e-commerce realm. The celebrity host’s endorsement of merchandise selected for presentation on his or her show, in effect, is the brand. Examples of such programming on the network include the Star Jones Show, hosted by Jones, a fixture on ABC daytime TV’s high-profile talk show, The View. A similar deal with garden writer and syndicated garden-show host Rebecca Kolls is in the works.

It may be two years away, but Internet sales tax is still an issue
Description: The Internet sales tax issue just won’t end. Rather than decide the future of taxes on the ‘Net, Congress and President Bush have delayed making a decision for two years. As 2001 wound down, Bush signed into law a bill that put a 2-year moratorium on Internet access and other discriminatory taxes. That means that instead of deciding on the issue of whether retailers must collect sales tax from online purchases, Congress has put it off for two more years, leaving players on both sides continuing the fight. Although the legislation does not directly address the sales tax issue, many interpret the moratorium as applying to sales tax. The primary goal of the moratorium is to prevent states and localities from levying Internet-specific taxes.
