How enticing customers to stroll down a virtual aisle can increase conversion rates
Description: The increased focus on improving online conversions is leading the retail industry to embrace skills that were developed offline, long before the Internet existed. Having struggled with multiple models for web stores, online marketers are realizing that if they want to achieve comparable success, they are going to have to start paying attention to what makes the offline channel work.
Albertson’s makes a bet on the future of online grocery shopping
Description: Now that the dot-com frenzy has faded some merchants are proving out concepts that failed only because they didn’t have the proper management or financial controls. Latest case in point: online grocery shopping.
C-stores get hooked to the web
Description: Fifteen years ago, convenience stores realized they could capitalize on selling convenient services as well as products. They went on an ATM binge, with the result that 63% of the nation’s 120,000 c-stores have ATMs. The success of ATMs has kept c-stores on the look out since for new technology that could mean additional convenience sales. The Internet is now supplying the opportunity.
The Long Road to CPFR
Description: When TruServe Corp., the co-op that serves TrueValue Hardware stores, wanted to start a collaborative supply chain program, supply chain managers realized quickly that the biggest issue they faced was not which technology to employ—it was setting the standards of what they expected from suppliers and what the suppliers could expect in return.
Retailers at auction: The 2% solution that’s growing fast
Description: For all the attention that retailers’ efforts to unload excess merchandise at eBay got this past year, retailers still represented only 2% of the merchandise sold on eBay in the fourth quarter. But online auctions mirror trends in the rest of online retail, and certain categories of goods are moving through auctions at a speed and volume that suggest they’ll soon drive that percentage higher.

Description: Sharpen your pencils. It’s time for the Q4 shopping quiz.
Just as online retailers embrace catalogs, along come e-catalogs
Description: It’s no longer news when an online retailer sends out catalogs. Even the most die-hard pure-play advocates—think Amazon and its newspaper inserts—acknowledge that e-retailers need paper to entice customers to order products.
Triple-play Merchandising
Description: Customers of The Sharper Image may react with that old Yogi Berra-ism as they log onto SharperImage.com, visit a Sharper Image store or flip through the Sharper Image catalog: It’s déjà vu all over again.
The Cool Promise of the Internet
Description: Anyone attending last month’s eTail 2002 conference in San Jose had to be struck by one thing—the sessions were sound, but not awe inspiring. Nearly everyone talked about improving conversion rates, fulfillment procedures, e-mail marketing results, and other such blocking-and-tackling issues. This is in stark contrast to the industry’s mindset two years ago. Back then, remarked conference panelist Ken Seiff, CEO of Bluefly.com, Internet retailing “was all about feeding mayonnaise to tuna fish,” or in other words long on promise, short on pragmatism. Since then, Seiff noted, e-retailers have focused on customer service, fulfillment and marketing skills, “and the real cool promise of the Internet hasn’t happen.”

The long slow crawl to m-commerce: Can pizzas revive a comatose marketing idea?
Description: During the Olympic Games two years ago, a television ad for wireless phones featured a woman using a cell phone to buy a soda from a vending machine. While full of the gee-whiz! factor, the ads also provoked many to think: “Who needs it? Why doesn’t’ she just put change into the machine instead?”
Fingerhut becomes un-Federated
Description: When Federated Department Stores Inc. bought Fingerhut Cos. Inc. in 1999 for $1.7 billion, the rationale seemed sound, even though the fit between the upscale Federated and middle market Fingerhut raised eyebrows. In the dot-com frenzy, some companies believed they had to do anything to get online. Fingerhut had a web site and, from its catalog background, a fulfillment operation. Federated did not.
