Online retail keeps getting better
Description: While retail was generally flat last year, online retail’s growth rate continued its rapid upward climb. Among the 130 e-retailers surveyed in The State of Retailing Online 6.0, a Shop.org annual study conducted by Forrester Research Inc., sales rose 48% to $76 billion in 2002 over a year earlier. Included in the figures are sales of event tickets, travel and auction sales. Non-travel spending in 2002 was $43 billion and represented a 27% increase over the previous year.
Sears and Michelin get rolling with exchange-based collaboration
Description: After a year of practicing supply chain collaboration through the GlobalNetXchange with tire manufacturer Michelin, Sears, Roebuck and Co. has boosted sales and profit margins while increasing products in stores and reducing inventory in distribution centers. It has already begun similar projects with Goodyear and Sumitomo and is planning to start several more. “We see opportunities to do this throughout the automotive products market,” says Hank Steerman, senior manager for supply chain.
A new lawsuit challenges another MasterCard policy
Description: No sooner had MasterCard and Visa capitulated in a suit by major retail chains challenging a card association policy than MasterCard was hit with another lawsuit—this one challenging a MasterCard policy toward online transactions.
The learn-as-you-go plan at eBay
Description: As sellers become smarter about using online auctions, they continue to refine their approaches to maximize returns. Liquidator Genco Distribution Systems recently found a correlation between the starting price of an auction and the winning bid. Genco, which sells surplus goods at eBay, used to start all bids at 30-35% of the original cost of the item. The average auction generated five or six bids and the average selling price was around $60, says Pete Rector, senior vice president.

SPONSORED SUPPLEMENT: Search Engine Marketing: The Major Online Promotion Tool
Description: There’s no doubt that consumers are turning to web search more than ever for the products they want to buy—or research—online. In just the past six months, for instance, consumers have conducted more than 1 billion retail-related searches at Google.com. In the past year, paid-search provider Overture Services Inc. has provided results on more than 2 billion commercial searches.

Ironing out challenges at a new web site
Description: When Hancock Fabrics Inc. wanted to upgrade its web site, it faced a unique challenge: Much fabric is sold in odd-length increments. “That’s a big deal to customers,” says Ryan Bramlett, manager of online services for Tupelo, Miss.-based Hancock Fabrics. “Some fabric is $40 or $50 a yard. To have to order a whole yard when all you need is a half yard is a significant issue.”

Spam is not SARS
Description: States are legislating against it. The Federal Trade Commission last month held high-profile and contentious hearings to determine if it should be regulated at the federal level. And IS gurus everywhere are arming corporate computer systems with software designed to find and kill it.
The end’s nowhere in sight, says a new eMarketer report
Description: There’s plenty of growth left in the online retailing market, says the new “North America E-Commerce: B2C & B2B” report just out from eMarketer Inc. EMarketer’s research projects that the number of online consumers age 14 or older who will buy online will grow 29.5% between last year and 2005. The number of online shoppers will similarly grow 29% while the amount they spend at retail will skyrocket 93%. Here are some highlights from the 237-page report: Source: eMarketer Inc.
Fighting to be Fresh
Description: Retailers have been using the web to minimize their buyers’ exposure to SARS. But sometimes you just have to send someone to meet with buyers. And in those cases, retailers still find the web useful—this time in minimizing the exposure that a traveler could bring to the staff back home.
Riding the custom trend with cowboy boots
Description: Until the Internet, the elusive market of one was almost impossible to serve. But the web solves a couple of problems in selling custom products. First, marketers can make customers do the work of filling in automated templates and providing measurements and preferences. Second, the web aggregates demand, so a service with limited appeal suddenly has a bigger base of customers.
Letting the web do the administrative chores of managing workforces
Description: Living without a web-based workforce management system was like living in another world for Scott Campanella, director of operations for Wolfgang Puck Catering & Events. His Los Angeles catering division of the trendy restaurant company must routinely gather hundreds of freelance waiters to staff celebrity affairs. But with competition from scores of other eateries and catering companies to schedule the best of L.A.’s waiters, who tend to also be busy actors and grad students, Campanella’s staff was constantly hitting the phones in a feverish dash of calls and repeated call-backs to reach its best performers.

You can`t print a coupon if you don`t have a printer
Description: While the web can greatly increase shoppers’ convenience and the ability of sellers to reach out to them with promotional offers, it can also increase levels of frustration in a shopping medium dictated by technology that neither shoppers nor sellers can always control. A case in point is online coupons: They can be a great tool for reaching an online shopper. But not if she doesn’t have a printer.

E-mail newsletters star in a campaign to drive offline sales
Description: In spite of the number of commercial e-mail messages that arrive in consumers’ inboxes every year, e-mail marketing is still a work in progress. Analysts constantly urge marketers to apply the same time-tested techniques to e-mail marketing that they apply to direct mail. Just as direct marketers test envelopes and wording, consultants urge e-mail marketers to test subject lines. Direct marketers test content and offers with A/B splits, so should e-mail marketers, consultants say. Ditto for response rates.
