Multi-channel: The new retailing standard
Description: It hasn`t taken long for the retailing industry to embrace the concept of multi-channel retailing. A new survey by researchers The Aberdeen Group Inc. based on responses from subscribers to Internet Retailer`s IRNewsLink e-mail newsletter shows that a mere 6% of store retailers operate only one channel. "For a all practical purposes, the single-channel retailer doesn`t exist any more," says Paula Rosenblum, director of retail research at Aberdeen Group.
Fashion’s online faux pas
Description: Sleek, colorful images and basic functionality are present on most top fashion brand web sites, but many web sites still lack a key ingredient: knowledge of exactly what the brand represents to consumers. Until that factor is understood and cranked into web site design, fashion retailers are missing an opportunity and, worse, risking damage to their brand in their online offerings, according to a recent survey from Brand Keys Inc.
Sears builds on Lands’ End to move into apparel and home fashions
Description: When Sears, Roebuck and Co. bought Lands` End Inc. two years ago, many analysts and consultants wondered how long it would take Sears to leverage Lands` End`s expertise on the web. They got their answer last month when Sears launched apparel and home fashions at Sears.com. "This is the culmination of Sears picking up Lands` End two years ago," says Bill Bass, vice president and general manager of Sears Customer Direct, who came to Sears with the Lands` End acquisition.

The web-enabled chain store
Description: When retail chain executives first responded to the potential of the Internet in merchandising in the late 1990s, many were acting defensively and, as a result, envisioning a relatively limited use of the Internet. At the time, the pure plays were the rage, and they were seeking—and getting—buckets of money from Wall Street by milking the promise of web sites that would capture an enormous share of retail sales. The chains responded by hastily putting up retail web sites of their own. It was partly in an attempt to convince their shareholders that they could compete in the online sweepstakes, too, and partly an effort to keep the fledgling web-only merchants from gaining control over the new retailing channel and, potentially, of retailing itself.
The web analytics riddle: How make the data mean something
Description: If a tree falls in a forest and there`s no one there to hear it, does it make a sound? And if web analytics data fail to reach those in the retail organization that need to see them in a form they can actually use, has all that spending on analytics had any positive impact? Not enough of one, contends Jupiter Research Inc. analyst Eric Peterson, which is one reason analytics providers are offering a new form of reporting based on key performance indicators that strives to make web analytics reports more palatable with information that managers can act on.
