How site search helps retailers meet customers’ higher expectations
Description: Site search and web search share a common origin: they provide functionality that helps online seekers find what they’re looking for. Major web search engines have gotten so proficient at that task that it’s had the effect of raising the bar for site search as well. “Everybody’s been Google-ized,” says Ofer Milstein, vice president of marketing at site search technology vendor Mercado Software Inc. “Because of consumers’ experience with web search, there are higher expectations of search on e-commerce sites.”
In spite of overuse concerns, e-mail marketing retains its luster
Description: E-mail marketing continues to be one of the prime ways in which retailers promote their web sites. In an Internet Retailer survey this spring of online retailers, 68.3% reported that they are expanding their e-mail marketing activity much more or somewhat more this year over last. Only 13.2% said they are using e-mail less and 18.6% that they are using e-mail about the same amount.
Keeping up with the demands on web pages
Description: With online sales continuing to outpace store sales, the way retailers manage their web content can make a big difference in how effectively they can capitalize on the web. In addition to increased sales through effective merchandising displays, content management can also produce improved customer relationships to keep customers coming back.
The changing landscape of affiliate marketing
Description: When it comes to online marketing, the spotlight is definitely on techniques other than affiliate marketing. But that doesn’t mean affiliate marketing doesn’t deserve some of the spotlight. Evidence: 19% of e-retailers in a recent survey report that 31% or more of their online sales come through affiliates. That same survey, by affiliate consultants Shawn Collins Consulting, reports that 20% of e-retailers have paid a single affiliate a commission of $20,000 or more in one month. 22% of respondents report that their affiliate programs create conversion rates of 5% or more, reports Collins’ survey, AFFStat 2005.
It’s not glamorous, but delivery is key to web retailers’ success
Description: The web site may create the first impression a customer has of an online retailer, but whether a purchased item is delivered on time often has a longer lasting impact on how a consumer perceives the company.
