Apple sells 1 million iPhones in 74 days
It turns out $599 was not too much for the iPhone, the highly touted mobile device from Apples Inc. that offers a PC-like Internet access experience along with a phone and a music player. Apple announced this week that it took only 74 days to sell 1 million of the iPhone that was introduced in June.
“One million iPhones in 74 days—it took almost two years to achieve this milestone with iPod,” crowed Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “We can’t wait to get this revolutionary product into the hands of even more customers this holiday season.”
Indeed, the iPhone figures to show up under more than a few Christmas trees after Apple announced last week it was cutting the price of the iPhone from $599 to $399. Compete, a research firm that tracks consumer behavior online, says 8% of iPod shoppers survey just before iPhone’s launch in June said they would pay more than $500 for the new Apple phone. Another 20% said they would be willing to pay between $300 and $499, suggesting that the price cut could increase consumer demand for the iPhone by as much as two and a half times.
