2004 web sales rise 15% at Mountain Equipment Co-op

Web sales at Vancouver, BC-based Mountain Equipment Co-op rose 15% year-over-year in 2004, to about $8 million, as holiday sales rose 5%, the retailer says.

Web sales grew slightly faster than total sales, which reached $175 million, says George Weetman, web marketing coordinator. Mountain Equipment, a retailer of outdoor sports equipment and clothing, operates 10 stores and multiple catalogs in addition to its web site at MEC.ca.

Helping to drive up sales in both channels is a web-based gift registry, which saw a 50% year-to-year increase in sales last year, Weetman says. The registry is available through in-store kiosks as well as through any web browser.

Mountain Equipment is also helping to drive multi-channel sales by offering free ship-to-store fulfillment of online orders.
