Kronos to buy Unicru to expand web-based workforce management for retailers

Kronos Inc., a provider of workforce management systems, will pay about $150 million in cash for Unicru Inc., which provides web-based hiring systems to retailers, the two companies said today.

“This acquisition moves us significantly closer to our goal of becoming the first $1 billion software company focused exclusively on meeting the human capital management needs of both large enterprises and small- and medium-size organizations on a worldwide basis,” said Kronos CEO Aron Ain.

By acquiring Unicru, Kronos will extend its workforce management offerings to include Unicru’s web-based online employee application system. The Unicru system, used by retailers including Best Buy Co. Inc., Borders Group Inc. and the Kroger Co., lets remote headquarters staff and as well as store managers view completed applications as soon as they’re filled out on web-based kiosks.

“The Unicru Total Workforce Acquisition solution is a perfect complement to Kronos’ Workforce Central suite, as it is designed to allow organizations to put the right person, in the right place, at the right time, reducing employee turnover while enhancing customer satisfaction,” said Chris Marsh, president and CEO of Unicru. “Acquiring Unicru greatly broadens the playing field for Kronos and offers the customers of both organizations the benefits of a combined workforce acquisition and workforce management solution to optimize workforce performance.”
