Expanding online retailer of eco-friendly products adds warehouse capacity

Safe Home Products has moved into a 6,000-square-foot warehouse in Iowa City, IA, to accommodate its growing sales of environmentally friendly products, the company says.

Safe Home, an online-only retailer, says it now handles 5,000 products, such as carbon and radon detectors, emergency equipment, and environmentally friendly cleaning supplies and pet products. The company had been operating out of the home and garage of founder Barbara Staib, and needed more space to handle its growing inventory.

The company also tries to provide as much information about each of the product it sells, Staib says. “If a customer wants information on a product and it’s not on the web site we will research the answer and add it to the site for our next customers,” she says. “For example, we’ve measured countless electrical cords on products ranging from rodent repellers to combustible gas alarms.

Founded in 1999, the company has shipped items to nearly 100,000 customers. Annual sales exceed $1 million, but the privately held company says it does not divulge detailed financial data.

With the additional warehouse space, Safe Home says it will now be able to directly ship 85% of its orders, with suppliers drop-shipping the rest.
